Claiming Social Security is one of the largest retirement decisions most people make, and one of the hardest to undo. In a United Income (2019) study, only 4% of retirees claimed at the financially optimal time, and households left an estimated $111,000 each on the table. The rules behind the decision are exact: full retirement age depends on birth year and can land on ages like 66 and 10 months, early-claiming reductions accrue by the month, and delayed retirement credits add 8% a year until 70.

Share your birth month and year and the full-retirement-age benefit on your SSA statement (ssa.gov/myaccount), and the estimator returns your full retirement age, your benefit at every claiming age still open to you through 70, and your cumulative breakeven ages.
